Student involvement is the commitment by a local unit to actively involve students in the work of the organization. Parents, teachers, and students are dedicated to work together as a team to train youth to be our future advocates, community leaders, and parents. The Hawaii State PTSA has student representatives on our board and we encourage and support student participation in PTA leadership, events, and programs statewide.
Each year the Hawaii State PTSA invites students to submit applications to serve a one-year term on our State Board of Directors. If you are a student and are interested or you know of a student who would welcome the opportunity to get involved, we’d like to hear from you.
The application deadline is April 15th of each year. Interested persons may contact our office, or any one of our student representatives to get more information.
Form a student involvement committee consisting of students and adults. Survey the school community to find out what type of activities would encourage student involvement. Develop a plan for student involvement based on your survey results. Set reasonable goals based on what you need to accomplish.
Develop activities that include and would be of interest to students and adults. Seek input from all students – not just those that are traditionally seen as "leaders."
When students pay membership dues, they are full members with the same rights, privileges, responsibilities, and credibility.
Reach out to other groups to co-sponsor events or activities of interest to students, for example:
·Student leadership and school organizations/clubs.
·Other student-focused groups in the community.
·Parent advisory committees.
·Other PTA units.
Publicize activities through your PTA newsletter; school or PTA Web site; flyers; marquee signs; local newspapers; personal telephone calls; media; and other newsletters. Promote positive student involvement through publicity (e.g., posters, radio announcements).
Evaluate activities and accomplishments at least once a year. This will show how students were actively involved, and how students can continue to be involved in PTA activities.
